Manyani prison : Prison used to detain the Mau Mau
28th October, 2013
Early in the 1950s, the British who had colonized Kenya decided to establish a holding camp in the middle of the Tsavo west national park. This it was hoped, would serve to deter inmates who entertained thoughts of escape. The Manyani camp held Mau Mau followers first and then after independence, was used to detain political figures. Today it is a maximum security prison, yet while the infrastructure has changed, there are still traces of its dark past.
