Finns flock over the border to watch team in Russia

16th June, 2021

Crowds of excited Finns chanted and cheered as they marched together towards the St. Petersburg Stadium to watch their national team face Russia on Wednesday (June 16) following an emotional start to the Euro 2020 tournament.

Finland's 1-0 victory over Denmark on Saturday in their first game at the finals of a major tournament was overshadowed by the collapse of Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen during the match due to a heart attack.

Some 1,000 Finns travelled across the border to Russia for the group stage match. Around 10 buses arranged by Finland national team's fan club departed on Tuesday.

However, the worsening COVID-19 situation in St Petersburg, where restrictions to contain the pandemic were tightened on Monday, caused many to reconsider their travel plans.
