Marakwet grapples with pest menace
For decades local farmers in Elgeyo Marakwet County have been grappling with the pest menace that has ravaged their fruits. The use of pesticides to deal with the pests has been unacceptable to the European markets due to the presence of chemicals. But now a proposal by a team of Kenyan university graduates who recently completed a one year training in agricultural technology in Israel toured kerio valley mango fields to educate farmers on biological pest control. The students who have been in the region for the last two weeks are working in conjunction with Kerio valley development authority expressed optimism the new methods will make Kenyan fruits acceptable in Europe.
