President Ruto under fire after renewed attack on Standard group during Gen Z remembrance

26th June, 2026

As demonstrations disrupted Nairobi and several other parts of the country, President William Ruto turned to social media to renew his criticism of the Standard Group, triggering a wave of reactions online.

In a post on X, the President took issue with the media house, prompting many Kenyans to respond by accusing him of attacking press freedom and using language they described as unpresidential. Others defended his position, arguing that media organizations should also be held accountable.

The exchange quickly became one of the day's most talked-about topics online, with users debating the role of the media, freedom of expression, and the relationship between the government and the press.

The President's remarks came as much of the country's attention remained focused on the nationwide demonstrations and heightened security operations across several counties.
