Opposition leaders distance from fuel protests but backs action

21st April, 2026

With hours to go before the planned “Total Tuesday Shutdown,” momentum behind the anti-fuel price protests appears to be fading.

Human rights defenders and several opposition political leaders have distanced themselves from the demonstrations called to oppose the newly increased fuel prices.

Speaking at his party headquarters, Rigathi Gachagua said his party will not take part in the planned protests.

The development comes as online mobilisation around the demonstrations remains limited, raising questions over whether the protests will attract significant turnout.

The protests had been billed as a nationwide shutdown over the rising cost of fuel and the broader pressure on household incomes.

By Monday evening, organisers were yet to show clear signs of large-scale support on the ground or across social media platforms.

Attention now shifts to whether Kenyans will heed the call to protest—or stay away.
