Baby Travis Death Probe: Senators probe death of two year old Travis Maina

1st November, 2022

The Senate Committee on Health has initiated a probe into the death of a two-year-old boy who had a fork jembe lodged in his head for over 24 hours.

Travis Maina died at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on October 11, 2022.

The hospital, in a statement, said Maina succumbed to injuries in the theatre after developing complications.

He had been referred by the Thika Level 5 Hospital, where he’d received emergency care.

In a Senate committee meeting held on Tuesday, October 25, Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago, who is the committee’s chair, said it had put in place steps that will help establish lapses that might have caused the death of the minor.

“The Committee during the meeting resolved to further inquire on the said matter by inviting several witnesses, among them, parents of the deceased, Thika Level 5 Hospital, Kenyatta National Hospital to establish circumstances that might have led to the passing on of the minor,” said the statement.

Further, Mandago said its findings endeavour to look at policy issues, especially in the health facilities that handled the deceased`s case and establish if there was negligence that led to the passing on of the minor.

The Health Committee has also resolved to look keenly at the Universal Health Care program.
