56-year-old cuts niche for himself as producer of traditional bee hives and an expert in harvesting

25th December, 2021

Beekeeping is one of the oldest practices which has since been modernized and even done on large scale for industrial use. Unknown to many it is a delicate venture right from designing the beehives, ensuring maximum production of honey, and eventually harvesting. Small scale farmers however prefer traditional beehives to the modern ones as the latter’s paintings and shape scare off bees thus low yields. The demand for beehives is as good as that of honey and in some communities like the Mbeere in Embu county, beehives are an accompaniment for dowry. As Allan Ochanda reports, 56-year-old Paul Kajita from Tharaka Nithi county has cut a niche for himself as the producer of traditional beehives and an expert in harvesting.
