The cabinet secretary for agriculture Mwangi Kiunjuri has ordered for a second audit of maize stored in all the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) stores countrywide to determine whether they are fit for human consumption.
An audit report by the Kenya Bureau of standards that were submitted to the Senate ad hoc committee investigating the maize crisis in the country shows maize stored in NCPB stores in 14 counties is contaminated with aflatoxin. The fresh audit comes against a backdrop of concerns that at least 2.1 million bags of maize out of the 3.6 million bags of maize that was procured by the NCPB from last years harvest is contaminated.
