Outcry over parliament’s move to pass bill with contentious clauses that threaten media freedom

Members of the media fraternity are dismayed after lawmakers approved a bill that could see journalists slapped with huge fines or jailed if found guilty of defaming parliament. A controversial clause in the bill provides for fines of up to half a million Kenya shillings or a two-year jail term. And the Media Council of Kenya says its wrong for parliament to pass laws that limit freedom of expression.
