Muslim cleric to spend 30 days in custody as court declines to grant bail

Muslim cleric who was arrested two days ago on allegations of having ties to al shabaab will spend the next 30 days in remand after he was denied bail. 32 year old sheikh Mohamed Khalid Mohamed Ali appeared before Mombasa senior principal magistrate Richard Odenyo who declared him a flight risk before denying him bail. Sheikh Mohammed was arrested by on Monday by anti-terrorist police who claimed they had been trailing him between Mombasa, lamu and Bodhai on the border between Lamu and Garissa counties. Mombasa county commissioner nelson Marwa claimed the suspect had been in contact with two fugitive jihadists suspected to have aided the April 2 terrorist attack in Garissa. Upon his arrest police recovered a grenade, plastic multiplier explosives and a detonator.
