Of all the traits of great leadership, probably the most underrated is knowing when to stand down, and then proceeding to do so with resolve, grace and style. And that is exactly why many admired outgoing Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan’s move to call the president elect Muhammadu Buhari to concede defeat in the just concluded elections. It was the first time an incumbent was being voted out of office in Nigeria’s history. But perhaps the most glaring are the many reasons why Goodluck Jonathan could have lost the reigns of Africa’s most populous nation.
