Trouble is brewing in the tea industry with a section of South Rift smallholder tea farmers vowing to withdraw from the Mombasa tea auction and establish in Kericho, the country’s second tea auction. The angry farmers led by Kericho Governor Paul Chepkwony and his Bomet counterpart Isaac Ruto say they have resolved to establish the new auction after farmers in western tea region suffered low prices for the umpteenth time from the Kenya tea development agency (KTDA). They said tea farmers can’t continue living like slaves.
