Tanzanians mark their Independence Day a little different from previous occasions

9th December, 2015

Citizens of Tanzania are today marking their independence day a little different from previous occasions. Newly elected Tanzanian President John Magufuli has scrapped Independence Day celebrations to spend the money on a clean-up campaign. Magufuli was quoted saying it is shameful that we keep spending huge amounts of money to celebrate independence when people are dying of cholera. Magufuli, who took power earlier this month after winning October 25 elections, has introduced a swathe of austerity cuts and crackdowns on public corruption.
