World commemorates International day for the African child

16th June, 2015

As the world commemorates the international day for the African child, Kenyan students from various parts of the country made their way to the Supreme Court to mark the event. The pupils thanked the judiciary for a ruling made two weeks ago aimed at keeping children safe from sexual violence in schools by guaranteeing them right to health, dignity and education. This was in accordance with this year’s theme which is accelerating collective efforts to end child marriage in Africa. The day of the African child was first commemorated in June 16th 1991, fifteen years after the Soweto uprising in south Africa where hundreds of students were shot dead by the apartheid regime.
