Nyeri County wants Cess collection as opposed to the money going to the National government

2nd June, 2015

The Nyeri County government has proposed changes in the collection of cess with the money to go straight to the county. Cess on tea and coffee is currently remitted to the national government, but the county says this has been denying it revenue to fund development activities. According to Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua the move is aimed at giving the county a steady flow of income from its agricultural activities. Previously the money that was sourced from coffee and tea cess and that is deducted from the sales was taken to the national government but will now be redirected to the county government. There national government had proposed revenue share framework with the county over the collection of the cess but was yet to be agreed on. The county government is eyeing investment in roads as a key priority especially in tea buying centers and factories to ease market access.
