Africa is on the cusp of a great economic takeoff. But a lot of this growth has been driven by external funds and aid, which has allowed international investors to access the African growth story, while locking local investors out. But both government and investors want the next phase to be powered by homegrown avenues, particularly through the continents budding capital markets. Speaking during the 18th Africa stock exchanges association forum, government leaders, regulators and representatives from 23 of the continents biggest stock markets say the continent has built the critical mass to fund the continents infrastructural and development needs. But players called on regulators not to stifle the market by introducing stringent rules and regulations.
