Farmers from Elgeyo Marakwet County abandon maize for tea farming citing poor returns

Farmers from Elgeyo/ Marakwet County have abandoned Maize for tea citing poor returns .the farmers said they have abandoned maize since they are incurring losses due to high costs of maize production. The farmers have opted for tea which they say has better returns .the Elgeyo Marakwet county has launched an initiative to give free seedlings and to educate the farmers who are venturing in tea farming . Elgeyo marakwet governor Alex tolgos said the county has great potential for the growing of tea but the enterprise has remained untapped because the residents relied on maize.
