Society divided over contraceptives for pupils
24th June, 2014
The row over whether to allow adolescents to be supplied with contraceptives without parental consent escalated yesterday, with religious leaders and civil society groups locking horns over a proposed Bill.
During a public hearing over the controversial Reproductive Health Care Bill (2104) at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC), Christian religious leaders angrily rejected clauses in the Bill that want to put contraceptives like condoms and pills in the hands of teenagers and also remove barriers to procuring abortions.
The Bill which is before the Senate has the support of members of the civil society who want it adopted to the letter. They supported the Bill, saying it would prevent many deaths especially of young girls, while religious leaders opposed it, saying it goes against Christian morals and called for more consultation over certain sections.
