Experts warn of a looming famine in Ukambani

22nd May, 2014

Farmers and residents from Kiboko area in Makueni County are raising the alarm over impending famine in the area if they are not facilitated to plant food crops in the area that has largely been associated with famine. The farmers are calling on the government to come up with a plan that will see them get enough water to irrigate their farms so as to be food sufficient. The farmers whose crops have withered due to lack of rain say they have adequate training on how to cultivate their farms but the dry skies have led to little or no harvest. Kenya Agricultural Research Institute however says there are plans to introduce a maize variety that will not be affected by insects and drought.
