Deputy President William Ruto departs for the Hague

Deputy President William Ruto this morning left for the Hague where he is expected to attend the assembly of state parties meeting despite an urgent application by ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda yesterday asking the court to rescind its decision allowing Ruto to skip today’s court session. In her application Bensouda says Ruto’s excusal was on the basis that he would be in Kenya as President Uhuru Kenyatta visited Kuwait. Bensouda argues that Ruto who is later in the day expected to lead the Kenyan delegation to the assembly of state parties meeting may have misled the court. Ruto’s lawyer Karim Khan dismissed the application saying Ruto will be back in court tomorrow. Khan says the defence had not given the court any information about Ruto’s role at the state parties conference.
