27th August, 2013
A group of Nyeri elders have revived the tradition of holding round table advisory sessions with the youths in a bid to warn them off vices.20 elders from three locations in Dedan Kimathi ward of Tetu district say the Mukima council of elders wants to address the disconnect between parents and the youth which they blame for the vices that have taken hold among the youth. Group chairman Jessie Gichuki say spiraling social problems including murders, rapes, defilement as well as divorces, separations and spousal abuse can be attributed in part to the fact that the youth has been left on their own. The groups will be expanding their interactions and intend to holding a meeting at the Ihururu stadium. In the meetings, the elders will tackle problems faced by boda boda operators and discuss plans to revive local sporting activities including football and volleyball tournaments.
