Likuyani quarry closed

24th July, 2013

A quarry in kakamega county has been closed following health and pollution concerns from area residents. Kakamega governor wycliffe oparanya ordered the immediate closure of the quarry in likuyani constituency accusing the national environmental management authority (nema) of failing to conduct a proper environmental impact assessment before initiating the project. Speaking after touring the site, oparanya expressed concerns over increase in respiratory diseases among locals, especially school-going children. The governor said the growth of crops in the region has been adversely affected, as well as cracks emerging on buildings as a result of tremors. Oparanya now wants the construction company operating at the quarry to compensate the victims.
