Unknown people kill Former Army Chief in Burundi Colonel Jean Bikomagu

15th August, 2015

News from Burundi indicates that the former army chief of staff has been killed by gunmen in the second high profile killing this month. Colonel Jean Bikomagu, who led the armed forces during Burundi’s civil war, was gunned down as he drove through the gates of his house. His daughter was badly injured in the attack, a family member told AFP. It is the latest in a wave of killings across Burundi, since president Pierre Nkurunziza decided to run for - and won - a third term of office. The Burundi civil war was fought along ethnic lines with mostly Hutu rebels fighting against the politically dominant Tutsi minority. Col Bikomagu led the Tutsis, while Nkurunziza was a member of a Hutu rebel group. Tensions there have forced more than 100,000 people to flee this year.
