Why Samburu County is the biggest livestock market in East Africa
10th May, 2015
Samburu County is said to be the biggest in east Africa. It brings together pastoralists from the counties of Turkana, Baringo, Isiolo, Pokot and Samburu. Often embroiled in hostilities of one kind or another, the communities participating in the buying and selling of animals have however confessed to getting along very well on the market days, that is, every Thursday. Their prayer now is to extend this goodwill to their homes in order to end the perennial war and cattle rustling. This comes at a time when Kenya is mourning the loss of over 60 lives at Nadome village in Turkana County last week.
