Butere Girls Play "It Is Well" Gains New Attention After Utumishi Fire Tragedy in Gilgil

4th June, 2026

Eight years ago, Butere Girls High School staged It Is Well, a play depicting a fictional police-linked institution, Recce Memorial Academy, destroyed by fire after bullying, exclusion and poor supervision spiraled out of control.

Today, the production is being revisited following the deadly fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil that claimed the lives of 16 students and left several others injured.

The play's writer, former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, says the drama was more than a festival performance. According to Malala, It Is Well highlighted the dangers of student unrest, weak supervision and failure to address early warning signs of conflict within schools.

The striking similarities between the fictional storyline and the recent tragedy have sparked fresh debate on student safety, school management and the need to address grievances before they escalate into disaster.
