IEBC explains why Marjan's exit was necessary ahead of 2027 polls

5th February, 2026

IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethekon says the decision was mutually agreed upon by the commission and Marjan, noting the need for leadership change at the secretariat. Ethekon explained that Marjan had overseen two general elections, and the commission felt it was time for a transition at the CEO position.

As senior political affairs reporter Chris Thairu reports, both the government and the opposition key stakeholders in next year’s general election have expressed comfort with the changes at the electoral commission.
