Police under scrutiny over death of Homa Bay blogger Albert Ojwang in custody

9th June, 2025

Albert Omondi Ojwang, a teacher and social media influencer from Homa Bay, was arrested on June 7, 2025, in connection with a post on X and detained at Nairobi’s Central Police Station. A day later, he was pronounced dead at Mbagathi Hospital with serious head injuries. Police allege he fatally injured himself by repeatedly striking his head against the cell wall, while his family and human rights groups reject this narrative, calling for an independent investigation. The National Police Service has suspended several officers and referred the case to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
