Fear as explosive device recovered on a farm

Residents of Baawaa village in Samburu County are now living in fear after an explosive device was recovered on a farm.

Area retired senior Chief Paul Lelukumani said the bomb was unearthed by a tractor that was ploughing land in one of the farms in the village on Saturday morning.

“Unknowingly, a child picked a metallic device and begun playing with it. The mother saw him and snatched the device away thinking that it had been dropped by the tractor,” he said.

Mr Lelukumai said the owner of the farm who works as a police officer identified the explosive device was a bomb.

This is the second time a bomb has been discovered in the area with residents expressing fear that there could be other undetonated bombs left by soldiers who used the area as training grounds in the past years.

“This bomb is very dangerous to people in this village. It was brought by soldiers and if it has been discovered in this farm, there could be others in the village and we are asking government to take urgent action to detonate it and find others that could be hidden in the ground to prevent future damages,” Thomas Lalaikipian, a resident of Baawa said.

Mr Lelukumani urged residents to caution their children against playing with metallic items as they could be bombs.

According to the residents, a team of police officers visited the village and promised that a bomb expert will be soon visiting to detonate the device.
