Matungulu man’s leg amputated after attack by hyena

The man has since been admitted to hospital after an attack by a hyena.

Doctors at Machakos level 5 referral hospital have amputated the leg of a 34-year old man from Kyeleni village in Matungulu Sub County who was mauled by a hyena Tuesday night.

The victim, identified as Nicholas Maingi, was referred to the facility from Kangundo Level 4 Hospital where he was initially admitted for treatment following the encounter with the wild beast.

A medic at the facility told Standard Digital that the patient was referred for further management after heavy bleeding and acute disfiguration of bones and tissues which required amputation and blood transfusion.

“We received the patient from Kangundo Hospital and he was immediately booked to theatre where the leg was amputated. He is responding well to treatment,” the medic said.

The patient said he encountered the hyena on his way home from a local shopping center where he had gone to watch ongoing African Cup of Nations match.

“It was a hyena. It attacked me and I was later rescued by neighbors who rushed me to the hospital,” said Maingi.

Kyeleni village has been prone to frequent human-wildlife conflict due its proximity to the Kilimambogo game reserve.
