Africa Boxing Championships light middleweight bronze medallist Boniface Mogunde is through to the finals of the first leg of the National Boxing League in Kitale.

Mogunde, who earned a bye in the quarterfinals, defeated Lucky Anyiro of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in the semifinals on points.

He will now face Abdul Awali of Vihiga in the final this afternoon after the latter dismissed Victor Okoyo of Kajiado in another semis.

"Despite losing, this is a good exposure that has increased my confidence in tackling future matches," said Okoyo.

Boxing Federation of Kenya Secretary General David Munuhe was happy for the league championships to have boxed-off after a long lay-off due to a congested calendar in international events earlier in the year.

"We had to start the league championships this time owing to a congested calendar in the international championships," he said.

Two experienced boxers in continental championships in George Cosby of Kenya and Edwin Okong'o of KDF will also square it out in the final of the middleweight this afternoon.

Both boxers won their semifinal matches on the Referee Stop the Contest (RSC) rule.

Cosby won his match against Niven Otieno of Siaya in the second round as Okong'o did against Allan Kwendo in the third round.

In the minimumweight (48kg), policeman Silas Onyango picked a points' victory against George Njau of Githurai 44 and will now face Abedneyp Kyalo of KDF in the final.

Kyalo saw off Mike Mwaka of Kajiado in the last four.

In the flyweight, Moses Irungu of Githurai 44 also cruised to the finals after he defeated Mohammed Hussein of Kibra.
