CHAN 2024: CAF fines FKF over security lapses at Kenya vs DR Congo match

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reportedly fined the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) sH2.5 million following a series of alarming security lapses during Kenya’s opening CHAN 2024 fixture against the Democratic Republic of Congo at Kasarani Stadium on Augyst 3, 2025.
According to an official security report compiled by CAF and first shared by sports journalist Bonface Osano, the high-profile clash on Sunday was marred by multiple incidents, raising serious questions about Kenya’s readiness to host continental tournaments.
The report outlines disturbing scenes that began outside Gate 11, where fans reportedly overwhelmed security personnel, triggering a stampede.
Several spectators are said to have sustained injuries as they forced their way into the venue.
Inside the stadium, a motorbike was seen weaving through dense crowds. This is considered a blatant violation of security protocols.

Fans were also caught on camera lighting a fire behind the stands at Block 18, actions that directly breach CAF's stadium safety regulations.
In the VVIP section, there was further commotion when CAF protocol officials, including members of CAF President Patrice Motsepe’s Close Protection Unit, were denied access.
The report notes that a CAF commercial staff member was allegedly assaulted by an employee from Falcon Private Security, the firm contracted for the event.
Harambee Stars are expected to face Angola at the same venue while DR Congo will take on Zambia at Nyayo Stadium.
