Top Fry Nakuru pick first win as Kabras Sugar, Oilers and KCB maintain Kenya Cup dominance

Menengai Oilers stayed top of the Kenya Cup with a 19-7 win away to the Strathmore Leos at Madaraka on Saturday.

Timothy Omela gave the Nakuru based side the lead, drilling home an early penalty for a 3-0 lead before Austin Sikutwa’s unconverted try put them 8-0 up.

The hosts responded through Philemon Olang’s try, Brunson Madigu converting to bring them to within a point of the Oilers, the scoreboard reading 8-7.

Omela then touched down on the stroke of half time to see the Oilers lead 13-7 before two second half penalties from Geoffrey Ominde secured the result for the Oilers.

In Kakamega, Kabras Sugar hammered Kenya Harlequin 31-6 to keep tabs on leaders Oilers.

Brian Tanga, Felix Ayange and George Nyambua crossed over to give the hosts a 24-6 half time lead before Stephen Sakari sealed the bonus point victory with a late try as the millers won 31-6

The win saw Kabras narrow the gap between them and Oilers to three points and with a game in hand.

Champions KCB were too strong for Masinde Muliro University after defeating them 41-10 at the KCB Sports Club in Ruaraka. 

The students from Kakamega put up a fight though, restricting KCB in the opening quarter hour before Jacob Ojee went over with Darwin Mukidza converting for a 7-0 lead.

Bob Muhati then skipped past three Masinde Muliro defenders to touch down, Mukidza sure with the conversion as KCB led this physical encounter 14-0.

Unconverted tries from Wilfred Waswa and Mike Kimwele gave the bankers a 24-0 lead at the interval.

Muhati landed his brace immediately after the restart before George Asin went over for KCB’s sixth try, the score board reading 34-0 with fifteen minutes still to play.

Brian Wahinya, on as a second half replacement for Samuel Asati lasted barely five minutes on the pitch, forced out for the game through a concussion, forcing Mike Kimwele to shift to scrum half as Isaac Njoroge came off the bench to slot in at the wing.

Kimwele would limp off moments later as Smith Muhoya moved to scrum half, with Darwin Mukidza slotting into Muhoya’s fly half role as Essau Otieno replaced twin brother Elphas Adunga in midfield.

Masinde Muliro, despite the massive deficit, were full of heart and got their first points of the afternoon through Eric Cantona’s penalty.

KCB landed their seventh try when Muhoya played in Oscar Simiyu who barged over the whitewash with Mukidza converting for a 41-3 score.

Cantona would then pounce on a loose ball that wrong footed Njoroge, scoring and converting at the death.

Topfry Nakuru registered their first win of the season, defeating Resolution Impala Saracens 29-27 at the Nakuru Athletic Club. The result saw Nakuru move out of the relegation zone for the first time this season while Impala remained second from bottom.

Record Kenya Cup Champions Nondescripts slipped to the bottom of the table after a 20-10 defeat away to Blak Blad at the Kenyatta University.

Other matches saw Mwamba defeat Homeboyz 25-7 at the Jamhuri Park while Kabras Sugar were 31-6 winners over Kenya Harlequin in Kakamega.
