Amref partners with social enterprise firm to supply clean water to flood-hit communities

Amref Health Africa has partnered with 4Life Solutions SEZ, a pioneering social enterprise firm, to deliver safe clean water to flood-ravaged communities of Mai Mahiu and Tana River.

As floods continue to wreak havoc, endangering lives and exacerbating the risk of waterborne diseases like cholera, this partnership emerges as a beacon of hope.

Dr Benjamin Nyilitya, the driving force behind 4Life Solutions SEZ's emergency response, extends heartfelt solidarity to the flood victims, acknowledging the dire circumstances they face.

"We acknowledge their plight during these challenging times," said Nyilitya.

"Access to safe, clean drinking water and sanitation is a human right and is vital for survival. We are thrilled to collaborate with Amref to make a significant impact in the lives of the Mai Mahiu and Tana River communities," he added.

Sarah Kosgei, Public Health Emergency Response coordinator at Amref Kenya and South Africa underscores the urgent need to provide essential services and save lives amidst this crisis.

"We are bringing health facilities to these camps through our mobile clinics," she said during a press conference in Nairobi.

As part of this collaboration, 4LS will donate 1000 SaWa Bags, valued at Sh750, 000, to AMREF Health Africa.

According to Nyilitya, the bags employ solar water disinfection (SODIS) technology, capable of eliminating bacteria, protozoa, and viruses.

The solar-powered solution can serve a household for up to a year.

4LS will also offer on-the-ground training and support, enabling the communities to efficiently use the SaWa Bags and sustain their water resources. This initiative empowers individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Thursday, May 9 said the government had set aside Sh300 million that will go towards resettling the communities affected by the floods that have so far claimed at least 62 lives and scores missing in Mai Mahiu.

In Tana River, thousands of families have been affected after River Tana burst its banks.
