MOMBASA COUNTY: The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has announced that its port capacity expansion programme is on track. Managing Director Gichiri Ndua said the first quarter of 2014 registered more gains compared to the same period last year.

Ndua said that in January 2014, the port began enjoying the benefits of the extension and dredging of the container terminal. This is when a WAF MAX-class MV Maersk Cairo, designed for large sea ports with a carrying capacity of 4,530 twenty-foot equivalent containers (teus) docked at the port.

Last year, the port handled 22.3 million tonnes of cargo, up from 21.9 million tonnes the previous year. However, container traffic recorded 894,000 teus compared to 903,000 teus in 2012.
