Government increases surveillance against new Covid-19 variant

The government has increased surveillance in all entry points to contain the Omicron Covid-19 variant.

Health PS Susan Mochache said the government was not taking chances to ensure all citizens are safe from the new variant.

''We are monitoring all people travelling from countries that have reported cases of the new variant to ensure our people are safe,'' said Mochache.

The Health PS said there are enough vaccines for all Kenyans and that the government is doing sensitisation to ensure all Kenyans take the jab.

Speaking at Nyaura Primary School in Kisii County yesterday, Mochache said there were mutations of the Covid-19 virus globally and that Kenyans should not put their guard down.

''While the government is doing everything possible to manage the spread of Covid-19, Kenyans also have a responsibility of observing the set protocols," said Mochache.

The PS said from the statistics there are minimal deaths and severe cases for people who are vaccinated.

Mochache said the new Omicron variant is a concern globally. She asked Kenyans to shun propaganda on social media against Covid-19 vaccines.

The PS said several strides have been made in the fight against coronavirus and there are very few reported cases across the country on a daily basis.

''The government is keen on ensuring that other economic activities are not affected, that is why we are not supporting severe containment measures being reintroduced,'' said Mochache.
