454 students who scored A to take course in medicine

Some 454 students who scored grade A in last year’s KCSE exam have been selected to pursue Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery.

Data seen by The Standard also shows that Pharmacy will admit 111, making it the course with the second-highest number of top students.

Computer Science will admit 90 students, being the third most preferred course.

Architectural studies and Architecture will have 61 students, Civil Engineering and Structural Engineering will admit 54 while Electrical and Electronic Engineering will have 52.

Dental Surgery will admit 39, Nursing 34, Clinical Medicine 33 and Aeronautical Engineering 29 admissions to close the top 10 courses selected by the A graders.

Bachelor of Law and Mechatronic Engineering will each admit 26 of the top performers; while Mechanical Engineering will have 21 of the top performers.

Other courses to be pursued by the top performers include Nursing and Public Health (15) Bachelor of Radiography (13), Software Engineering (10), Quantity Survey (5) while Biomedical Engineering and Microbiology and Biotechnology will each get 4 students

Some 1,152 students scored A in last year’s Form Four national examinations.

These will be the pioneer lot of the new university funding model unveiled by President William Ruto in May and takes effect in September.

Nearly half of the students who scored A will join the University of Nairobi. The university will admit 418 of the 1,152 students who scored A.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) will take the second highest number - 264.

Kenyatta University will admit 151 of the A-graders, followed by Moi University with 71 and Egerton University with 58 students.

Maseno University will admit 53 students, Technical University Kenya (TUK) will get 38 students and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology and Kisii University will each get 22. Multimedia University will admit 15.

Dedan Kimathi University of Science and Technology will open its doors to nine top performers as the University of Embu will receive six students.

Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) will admit two of the top students. Meru University and Kibabii University will each admit one student from the top KCSE stars.

Among the private universities, Uzima University and Mount Kenya University were the favourites among A students.

Data shows that some 21 students who scored A will join private universities next month.

Uzima University will admit 12 students who scored A and Mount Kenya University six. Daystar University, Kenya Methodist University and Kenya Highlands Evangelical University get one student each.

These students will not qualify for government scholarships or grants having sought admission to private institutions. They however qualify for government loans.
