IG Kanja summoned over Karuga property dispute

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has been summoned to appear in court on Thursday over a land dispute in Kiambu County.
Justice Erick Ogola, the presiding judge in the High Court’s Family Division, summoned Kanja after it emerged that police had failed to guard the property in question.
“I therefore order that the Inspector General of the National Police Service, Douglas Kanja, do appear in this court on October 9, 2025, to explain why the order dated November 6, 2024, issued by this court has not been complied with,” reads the order.
The matter in question concerns the succession of former Provincial Commissioner in the government of Kenya’s first President, Jomo Kenyatta, Charles Karuga Koinange.
Karuga was Kenyatta’s brother-in-law, while his elder brother, Mbiyu Koinange, was a close confidant and ally of the president.

On one end, Rosemary Koinange is suing in her capacity and on behalf of Wilfred Koinange.
In the suit, she is joined by CKK Estates (1973) Limited, Samuel Karuga Koinange, Susan Nduta Koinange, Peter Wanduga Koinange, Mecol Limited, and Ngorongo Tea Factory Limited as applicants.
The seven applicants are battling Isabella Wanjiru Karanja and Peter Mbiyu Karuga as the first and second respondents.
CKK Limited owns the property in question, L.R. No. 134/8, and another piece of land known as Njuno Farm, L.R. 245/4, both in Kiambu.
On November 4, 2024, Justice Ogola, in his October 2, 2025, ruling, noted that Chief Inspector Patrick Macharia had appeared in court on behalf of the Kiambu County Commander.
In his appearance, Macharia assured the court that he would protect the suit property against any invasion or interference in compliance with the orders.
“It now transpires that the said suit property has been unlawfully and illegally invaded by people acting against the said court order.”
Justice Ogola directed that since the property had been invaded despite his orders, the title deeds should be deposited in court for safekeeping before October 9, 2025, when the matter will be mentioned.
