KCAA engages counties to revive dormant airstrips

NAIROBI: Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) is engaging county governments hosting airports and airstrips to discuss their use and how to enhance security of our air-space.

KCAA Chairman Samuel Poghisio said counties are well-placed to jump start operations in dormant airstrips and maximise usage of underutilised aviation facilities due to decentralisation of investment projects.

“We cannot underestimate the potential of the aviation sector. Many economic activities have come on board courtesy of county governments, which we want to be key stakeholders in developing the sector,” he said.

ACTIVE AIRSTRIP

Speaking to the Press in Eldoret after KCAA board of directors met Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno, Poghisio said the county is lucky to have an international airport and an active airstrip though they need to be fully maximised to boost the regional economy.

“Eldoret International Airport has a very huge service capacity in the aviation sector but it continues to be underutilised. By engaging counties, which enjoy proximity with locals and can forge business with many investors world over, we can maximally exploit the airspace for the benefit of the citizens,” he said. Chemno said working with KCAA will help them establish synergy in development projects.
