Quarry operators in Mavoko Constituency, Machakos County have appealed to the Government to improve local roads. They also urge the government to contain the increasing number of investors in residential property who have invaded land set aside for quarrying.
The operators singled out the 25 kilometres Mlolongo-Katani-Kamulu road which passes through more than 30 quarries in the area, and which is their main link to markets in Ruiri, Utawala, Tala and Kangundo as one that requires immediate attention.
They argued that the county government generates Sh19 million cess collection daily from the quarries and that they have a right to demand improved road infrastructure.

Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua during the launch of Athi-River roads construction last year noted the need to improve roads in Mavoko among other areas.

“Our Machakos road programme is elaborate and soon we will be tarmacking Syokimau, Katani, Kinanie, Lukenya roads within Mavoko and many more roads in each of our eight constituencies. We are building these roads with our own county funds,” read Dr Mutua’s speech in part.
Now, some quarry operators in Mavoko want Governor Mutua to visit the area and help solve their problems. They especially want the Katani-Kamulu road opened up and be made an all-weather road since their transportation trucks cannot use it whenever it rains.
They want the old Mlolongo-Katani road to remain an access road while the proposed Mlolongo-Katani Primary school-Quarry road, which is wider enough for trucks, be improved to serve Syokimau and Katani.
