Taxi operators up in arms over rising insecurity as clerics seek protection

Taxi drivers in Naivasha staged a protest at a local police station over a colleague’s disappearance.
The irate drivers who operate outside Serah Centre expressed concern over rising armed robberies.
They said in three months, five vehicles have been violently stolen from them. Yesterday, they were protesting at the disappearance of Zachariah Gitonga and his white car, registration number KAR 362A on Tuesday, last week.

The driver had been called to pick a client in one of the hotels, but his phone went off a few hours later and has not been traced. Their Chairman Peter Gathemba said efforts to trace him have been fruitless.
"We are worried as it is now close to a week and we have not traced him and we fear for his life," said Mr Gathemba.
Last year, a taxi driver was killed and five vehicles stolen and the drivers dumped after being drugged.
Police action
Naivasha OCPD Ernest Oponyo called for patience, assuring them police were investigating the case.
He called on the drivers to volunteer any information that would help in the investigation.
"You should be wary of strangers who walk in groups of three and in case you suspect them, just give us a call," Mr Oponyo said.
Meanwhile, religious leaders in Gilgil have expressed concern over armed robbers targeting churches.
Speaking to the Press after meeting at Joy Celebration Church, Gilgil, they called for urgent measures to curb the menace.
