CHADEMA demands answers over alleged plot to poison Lissu in custody

Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) has demanded an immediate investigation into reports of an alleged plot to poison its National Chairman, Tundu Lissu, while in detention in Tanzania.

The party raised the alarm on Wednesday, July 2, after several sources, including Honourable David McAllister, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, posted concerns on social media.

"I am deeply concerned by the alarming reports regarding possible attempts to poison Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu in detention," said McAllister.

The reports, which surfaced on the night of July 2, have pushed CHADEMA to seek urgent transparency from Tanzanian authorities.

"This is not a matter to be taken lightly, especially since CHADEMA leaders have previously faced threats, attacks and oppression, with many such cases reported to authorities but left unaddressed," stated CHADEMA.

Lissu is facing treason charges brought by the Tanzanian government. Human rights organisations have reportedly been barred from observing the trial, with some representatives detained or deported.

CHADEMA has urged the government to confirm Lissu's safety while calling for an independent investigation into the allegations.

"We urge the relevant authorities, including the Security and Defence Forces, the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Judiciary, to act swiftly, independently and thoroughly to investigate these allegations. We call on the government to make a clear and responsible statement to guarantee the safety of Hon. Tundu Lissu while in detention," stated CHADEMA.

The party also appealed to the international community, including human rights groups, ambassadors and stakeholders, to monitor the case and continue advocating for accountability and the protection of human rights in Tanzania.
