Electric fault, not Al-Shabaab attack at Moi University

An electric fault in students’ Hostel D at Moi University Main Campus at 5:40 am on Wednesday March 23, 2016 caused panic among students, prompting some to jump through the windows.
The incident occurred due to tapping of electricity by students from one room to another, causing an explosion in the process.

Students in the neighbouring Hostel G, unaware of the electric fault, thought the University had been attacked after one student shouted, “Al-Shabaab”, raising fear among the rest of the students.
In fear, the students jumped through the windows to save their dear lives.

Three students from Hostel D and 19 students from Hostel G were injured in the melee. Eleven of the students have been referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret town for x-ray and further diagnosis while the rest were treated at the Moi University dispensary and discharged.

Moi University Management wishes to assure the public that there was no Al-Shabaab attack on Moi University, but an electric fault that caused an explosion.
