Coffee farmers in Uasin Gishu County to receive 5.2 million seedlings

Coffee farmers in Uasin Gishu County will receive 5.2 million seedlings from the national government in the next two financial years to boost production.

Cooperatives and MSMEs Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, said 200,000 seedlings will be distributed this year.

Oparanya announced that farmers will receive an additional 5 million seedlings next financial year to boost coffee production.

He said the government would support the sector to restore its glory by increasing production from the current annual 50,000 metric tonnes to 150,000 metric tonnes by 2027.

Oparanya, accompanied by area Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea, noted that Uganda and Ethiopia have surpassed Kenya in coffee output, stating the government is determined to reclaim the country's former glory in the global coffee market.

"This is a great day for farmers from the great county because, as we speak, I want to assure you that the government has plans to distribute 20 million seedlings and has furthermore set aside Sh 500 million to boost coffee production not only in Uasin Gishu but for the entire country," said Oparanya.

He revealed that NPK 17:17 fertiliser is now available at a subsidised price of Sh 2,500 per bag through coffee factories and National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots, respectively.

"In addition to the figures previously mentioned, the government has allocated Sh 2 billion to purchase coffee pulping machines, which will be delivered within six months. So what are you still waiting for? You will be the ones to benefit more shortly," the CS urged.

Oparanya emphasised the importance of having modern milling equipment in every county, a goal the government plans to achieve through KPCU support.

He also urged farmers to register with the cooperative and expand their acreage under coffee cultivation and encouraged diversification into coffee farming to improve income levels.

The minister highlighted the involvement of youth and women in coffee projects as a priority for economic empowerment.

On his side, Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea affirmed the county government's commitment to supporting farmers and called for enhanced research, improved seed varieties, better storage, and efficient milling infrastructure.
