Orma set ablaze suspected attacker

Tana raid death toll has risen to 43 after the Orma people butchered a suspected attacker from the rival Pokomo tribe before burning his body at Kipao village, Sunday morning.

He was found deeply wounded in the bushes by scouts from the Orma tribe and bludgeoned to death then set ablaze as police stood by without interfering.

Hassan Mohamed, a local resident who spoke to The Standard at Oda Trading Center near Kipao village said ethnic Orma on patrol captured the suspected attacker and killed him.

Meanwhile, up to 2,000 members of the Pokomo tribes and other residents of Ngao village have embarked on exodus from their village as rumours swirled that ethnic Orma militiamen were planning to avenge the killing of their kin on Friday.

And ethnic Pokomo have accused GSU of detaining children and targeting men from their villages. The Orma have counter-argued saying they are victims of police neglect and accused the GSU of abetting Friday’s massacre at Kipao village.

Many of those fleeing had recently returned to Ngao to register to vote and for Christmas festivities but have now been forced to flee the settlement.

Local elders claimed about 2,000 people had fled Ngao by Sunday but this could not be confirmed independently because Tana River County Commissioner Joseph Rotich said the Government had no statistics on those fleeing.
