Anguish engulfed a family in Kaloleni, Kilifi County, after their two daughters drowned in a river.

The two, aged five and three, had gone to fetch water at Bechirindo River on Sunday evening.

According to the girls’ mother, Ms Rachael Foleni, they left home at around 4pm only to be called after an hour with the sad news. “After church, I gave them lunch and later asked them to go to the river. That was the last time I saw them alive,” cried Foleni, on Monday.

The river, which is 500 metres from the girls’ house, is said to be eight feet deep and the young girls could have drowned after slipping into the waters and could not swim.

She said the bodies were recovered by a herdsboy. One of the girls, Triza Deche was washing her clothes when she slid and fell into the water and in a bid to save her, sister Linda tried to pull her arm but unfortunately she also fell and drowned.

Kaloleni OCPD, Beatrice Gachago, said the bodies were moved to Coast Provincial General Hospital mortuary.
