Qambar Somji made good use of the home course to win the 2017 Bryson Muasa clubnite trophy at the par 71 seaside Mombasa golf course at the weekend.

Playing off handicap, Somji who is also the club’s former club captain, however, survived on a countback score of 72 nett to claim the trophy.

Somji’s victory came after rolling eight level pars and bogeying the rest of the holes in both nines of the 18-hole tournament that attracted 100 golfers.

“I played against strong winds from the nearby Ocean, which badly affected my putts, but I won in the end,” said Somji.

He tied on the same score with handicap 11 Maina Gichungu, who was runner-up. Gichungu, who last weekend won the 2016 captain's (Jacob Murimi) prize event at the same venue with 42 differential points, began well as he sunk a birdie on the par four-first hole.

He went on to roll six level pars and hit nine bogeys, but sadly double bogeyed six holes in both nines to narrowly lose the victory.

The outgoing club captain Jacob Murimi, playing off handicap 11, was third on 73 nett.

At the par 72 Thika course, Simon Mburu scored 40 points to win the 2017 Johnnie Walker golf series. He defeated a team of 208 golfers in the day-long 18-hole tournament.

Gathuri Wanjau, on 38 points, was the runner-up. Linda Kinyua, on a countback score of 35 points, was the lady winner after tying on the same points with Dorcas Njogu.
