Mauricio Pochettino's men are on the cusp of landing a new striker, in the shape of AZ Alkmaar's Netherlands' international Vincent Janssen.

But according to reports in Germany, Spurs are now at the front of the queue for Gotze, who has seemingly accepted that he has no future left at Bayern Munich - despite proclamations to the contrary earlier in the summer.

Liverpool have also been keen on a move, which would see Gotze reunite with Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

However, the Reds have shelled out £30million on Sadio Mane from Southampton and can already count upon Adam Lallana, Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho.

Now, according to Bild, it is Spurs who will rival Gotze's former club Borussia Dortmund to sign the 24-year-old, who is likely to cost around £20million.

Gotze has told Germany teammates while on international duty at Euro 2016 that he is aware his future at Bayern is over and that he needs to move on for regular game time in 2016-17, having been disappointed with his own displays with Die Mannschaft.

And it's been revealed that the players representatives have held initial talks with Spurs, over a move to White Hart Lane - with Spurs able to offer Champions League football next term.

Dortmund are interested in taking him back to the North-Rhein, three years after his £30million switch to Bundesliga rivals Bayern despite fan protests towards the end of the season.

And Thomas Tuchel's men are in the market for further reinforcements, following the departure of Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Manchester United.

Yet, CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke was non-committal over a potential return last week, declaring: "Until there is a new development, we do not deal with this issue."

However, the Dortmund chief has confirmed the club will bolster their attacking ranks, stating: "It is clear we will do something."

Bayern have been pushing since the end of the season to sell Gotze, who has just one year left on his deal at the Allianz Arena, and has struggled since joining from Dortmund three years ago.

CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge declared earlier this summer: "We made everything clear to Mario," he said. "He knows what the club thinks and he knows what the future coach thinks.

"Mario has to consider for himself whether he wants to constantly get minutes.”
