St Joseph’s Kibwezi signal intent in hockey opener

Defending champions St Joseph’s Kibwezi started their title defence on a positive note after they trounced hosts Machakos 5-0 in a fast-paced hockey girls’ match in the Metropolitan Secondary School Games in Machakos.

Kibwezi’s winger Catherine Mulandi who displayed an outstanding game opened the scores when she waved her way past Machakos defenders to sound the boards in the 11th minute during the match yesterday.

Ann Mwikali extended the lead when she converted a field goal in the 12th minute before Salome Kavisya struck a hattrick with a goal each in the 28th, 34th and 44th minutes.

Kibwezi captain Trizah Mutuku said: “The match was not as easy as the scores indicate but we outshined and our great stick work did the trick for us.”

Battle of the ‘Mois’

Moi Girls Nairobi won the battle of  the ‘Mois’ after they dismissed Moi Girls Isinya 3-0 in another girls group match.

Vivian Akinyi, Mercy Cherono and Daisy Akhokho scored one goal apiece for the winners.

Moi Girls Nairobi coach Olubayi Amai said: “Winning the opening match means that the players will go into the next fixtures when much relaxed. It would be easier to play the next matches now that we’ve started on a winning note.”

 In hockey boys, Kilungi recorded the first upset of the tournament after they scored two goals inside the last two minutes of the match to beat Lenana 2-1.

Lenana had taken the lead through Simon Mwenga who scored in the 21st minute.

Lenana lost concentration in the final minutes and Kilungi capitalised on the opportunity to scored two quick goals through Muya Kisuna (49th minute) and Newton Kilonzi (50th minute).

In basketball boys, Laiser Hill outshined Johannachase 91-23 with Mohammed Hassan and Parfait Ishimue registering 15 points each for the winners.      

Hard David scored eight points for Johannachase.

In girls’ category, Buru Buru defeated Muthetheni 58-18 in their first fixture of the tournament.

In rugby, St Mary’s Nairobi defeated Oleferema 15-5 in one of the preliminary matches.

Meanwhile, African Junior Cross Country silver medalist Andrew Lolot and schools’ reigning queen, Ruth Chebet, are the runners to watch when the athletics programme starts today. 

Meanwhile, the Association of Kenya Women In Sports (Takwis) officials led by honorary Secretary Milka Omenda who is a former teacher will grace the Metro games tomorrow, Publicity Secretary Mary Aran said.
