Kabras Sugar RFC and defending champions KCB registered routine wins over the weekend as Kenya Cup action returned after a year break due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Kabras welcomed newbies Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST RFC) with a 56-0 thrashing in Kakamega as the bankers narrowly edged out returnees Strathmore Leos 24-16 in Nairobi.

In Nakuru, which hosted a double header, Menengai Oilers thrashed Kenya Harlequins 39-12 in the early kick-off at Nakuru Athletic Club as Top Fry Nakuru RFC bagged a routine win over Blak Blad after defeating the Kenyatta University side 13-8.

Kabras lead the standings with five points after drilling nine tries past MMUST with Alfred Orege, Teddy Akala, Jameson Musoga, Walter Okoth, Dan Sikuta, Felix Ayange, Brian Jumah Teddy Akala and Kevin Wekesa all crossing over.

The millers’ new head coach Mzingaye Nyathi said he is keen on maintaining that form going forward.

Speaking to Standard Sports, Nyathi said he was impressed with the quality his team has shown in their past two matches against Quins and MMUST, noting that they can only get better as the season progresses.

“The pandemic left a huge gap in not only rugby, but other sports too. My players are not fully fit and at their best performing level, but am impressed with their work ethic and drive over the past two weeks since rugby returned.”

“We have played two matches where we have rotated almost 10 players and I am happy all players are ready and performing well. With that mentality, I believe we can build on our wins and perfect our games going forward,” Nyathi said.

The Zimbabwean tactician is confident of ending the sugar men’s Kenya Cup drought which has now stretched to five years.

“It is too early to call or make assumptions on who is going to win this year but my objective when I took over the role of head coach is to win the Kenya Cup again with Kabras. Of course we have good teams in KCB, Oilers and Quins but if we continue getting positive results, we will get there,” he added.

Oilers are joint top with Kabras with five points after they welcomed Quins with a 39-13 defeat in the early kick-off running seven tries and one conversion.

Timothy Okwemba bagged a hat trick to add to Steve Austin, Geoffrey Omonde, Steve Arunga and Emmanuel Mulindo's tries.

KCB are third in the log also with five points after crossing over the white wash four times against Strathmore Leos, which earned them the bonus point but trail Kabras on total goals. They have scored scored 24 to the miller’s 56.

Captain Curtis Lilako, Isaac Njoroge, Geoffrey Okwach and Michael Wanjala scored for KCB.
