Three more miners rescued from Abimbo goldmine

Three out of the four miners who were still trapped in the collapsed mine in Abimbo village, Bondo sub-county have been rescued alive.

The three were rescued on Wednesday morning as search for the fourth person continues.

Philip Joel Ogutu, Victor Otieno and Jacob Onyango were rescued at around 2am as the search for the eight miners who were trapped when the mining shaft collapsed on Thursday afternoon entered its seventh day.

According to the area Deputy County Commissioner Richard Karani, the victims were rushed to Bondo sub-county hospital for treatment.

"The search for Tom Sikuku is still underway and we're hopeful that he'll be found alive. We thank God and all those who have been participating in the rescue operation," said Karani.

The recovery of the three now brings the number of the victims to seven, after one was recovered dead.

The body was taken to Bondo sub-county hospital mortuary.

The families and relatives of the victims have been camping at the site since Thursday, with hopes of getting them alive.
